Many Beverly Hills BMW and Los Angeles BMW buyers are interested in BMW's new electric and hybrid sub-brand. In Frankfurt, Germany, BMW recently introduced two prototypes, the i3 and i8, of their upcoming new sub-brand.
The i3 is expected to be produced for the 2013 model year. This compact vehicle runs completely on electricity and will be ideal for the city commuter. The battery charges to eighty percent in just one hour. The car is powerful enough to go from zero to sixty in about eight seconds.
The i8 is expected to be produced for the 2014 model year. This sports car is a gasoline-electric hybrid. The i8 goes from zero to sixty in only five seconds. Maximum speed is limited to 135 miles per hour by a governing system. According to Klaus Draeger, the person who developed the i8, this vehicle is "the sports car for a new generation--pure, emotional, and sustainable."
Both the i3 and i8 have a light-weight carbon-fiber frame and aluminum underbody that reduces frame weight by about 550 pounds. Draeger said that this is "the first volume-produced car featuring bodywork largely made of carbon" and referred to it as a "revolution in automotive design."
Beverly Hills BMW and Los Angeles BMW car buyers may be interested to know that the plant used to make the carbon fiber uses hydroelectric power and the plant that assembles the vehicles uses windmill power. BMW is emphasizing using renewable resources in the production of the i series of cars.
