A True Master But A Sad Story
I received a letter from a Master Instructor in California 2 days ago (yes, a REAL letter, real paper, real ink - blue in fact, in REAL handwriting).

I received a letter from a Master Instructor in California 2 days ago (yes, a REAL letter, real paper, real ink - blue in fact, in REAL handwriting).
First, I was pretty surprised to receive a "Real" letter, in today's "texting" - Facebooking
- emailing - IMing - tweeting - skyping world, but I was really shocked by what I read.
This gentleman (who shall remain nameless out of respect for his privacy) ran a school
in central California for 22 years.
He was an 8th Degree Black Belt, Master Instructor, VERY well known and well respected
competitor in his youth, and a highly respected "master" in his association.
He described to me how DEEPLY he loves his art and how he dedicated his life to its study.
His art had done so much for him personally that he decided in 1988 to share it with
others and open a school.
In the letter he describes how he felt when he made the decision to open the school, how excited he was and how he felt like he was honoring his seniors, instructors and the 2000 year history of his art buy passing it on to the next generation.
He said: "I felt like I was going to be taking my place amongst the masters and grandmasters of the past, and that I'd be edifying their lives by ensuring their legacy lived on into the future."
He goes on to describe how he opened his school in a vacant space where a Dance school had once lived, and how he had a big influx of new students when he first opened the doors.
In the first couple weeks, he had 50 students training in the school, and he was making enough money to pay the bills.
The weeks went by, turned into months, then stretched into years, and low and behold, 22 years later, he still had about 50 students training in his school.
He had to take a "full time" job working at a local factory making car parts to support his family, pay his mortgage, and help support the school expenses from time to time. (Since the school was only breaking even at best)
So, fast forward 22 years, and instead of being a shinning, enthusiastic, energetic, "evangelist" for his art, he now describes himself like this:
"I was emotionally, physically, mentally and financially drained and defeated. In fact, I even felt "bitter" that some (less qualified) instructors could be more financially successful than me. I love my art, I loved my students, I loved my school, but it's crystal clear to me now, that simply loving it, and working hard just isn't enough."
As you may have guessed, he had to close his school 6 months ago.
After reading his letter (forgive my language) but I started to get really pissed off.
YES, the economy had been "challenging" over the
past 24 months.
YES, California had been hit particularly hard.
YES, there are "charlatans" out there teaching
crappy lessons, and are only trying to make a buck.
YES, the UFC is giving the Martial Arts a "bad name"
with the family market.
HOWEVER:
MANY....MANY....MANY Schools are KICKING ASS right now, and there is NO REASON you can't be too!
The ONLY reason this man failed in his school is that he simply lacked a couple fundamental skills in running his school - as a business.
He was a great instructor, a great mentor, and a great role model, but he was missing 3 key fundamentals that are ESSENTIAL to run a successful school.
Master these fundamentals and you'll be successful, fail to master them, and you'll go the way of the do-do sooner or later.
I DON'T WANT TO SEE MORE SCHOOLS SUFFER THIS FATE.
Grandmaster Stephen Oliver and I have made a DEEP commitment to helping school owners transform their school into a thriving, vibrant, freedom granting, exciting, successful business this year.
NO ONE in the martial arts industry has helped more school owners add $10,000.00, $20,000.00, $30,000.00, $50,000.00 per month, or MORE to their PERSONAL income than Stephen Oliver.
Here is your chance to join the association of the Martial Arts Business Masters.
We're coming to a city near you to help school owners MASTER these fundamentals, and set their school on the path to success, prosperity, and to create a legacy that will live FAR beyond your teaching years. For more information visit http://napma.com/
