Irvine, CA (prHWY.com) October 13, 2011 - Recognizing the innovators and products that dramatically advanced the fields of technology, environmental engineering, medicine, and more, Boral Roofing, Americas most sustainable roofing manufacturer, today announced that it has been awarded a Popular Mechanics' 2011 Breakthrough Product Award for its BoralPureTM SMOG-EATING Tile. Boral Roofing accepted the award at the 7th Annual Breakthrough Awards ceremony at Hearst Tower in New York City on October 10.

In selecting the candidates and winners of the 2011 Breakthrough Awards, the editors of Popular Mechanics canvassed a wide range of experts to come up with a list of worthy innovators, then consulted dozens of past Breakthrough Award winners in a wide range of fields. Hundreds of products are tested in a variety of categories year-round in order to arrive at the true game-changers for the Breakthrough product awards. Awards were given to the top 10 innovators whose inventions will make the world smarter, safer and more efficient in the years to come, and the top 10 products, which are setting benchmarks in design and engineering today.

"It's truly an honor to recognized by Popular Mechanics' technology and innovation community with an award like this," stated John Renowden vice president of product development at Boral Roofing. "It is a wonderful accomplishment and positive reinforcement that our science and technology driven products for the building industry are setting new standards and creating change in our environment."

Nitrogen oxide is a major driver of air pollution and smog, generated from every burning process and present in a very high concentration in street traffic. Nitrogen oxide molecules can cause respiratory diseases along with permanent damage to plants and trees. Over one year, 2,000 square feet of the new tiles can destroy approximately the same amount of nitrogen oxide as a car produces from being driven 10,800 miles.

With its SMOG EATING Tile, Boral Roofing has turned a standard building material into a formidable weapon--not just against sun and rain, but also air pollution. The tile's coating contains TiO2 (titanium dioxide), which reacts with and neutralizes NOX (nitrogen oxide) particles in smog. The byproducts are harmless particles that wash off the roof with rain making this a truly eco-friendly product.

The SMOG-EATING Tile's ability to neutralize smog represents one real way that American consumers can act to neutralize the harmful effects of air pollution and protect the environment. The World Health Organization estimates that 2.4 million people die annually of causes directly attributable to air pollution. While many Americans contribute to the problem because of their dependence on petroleum products to run their automobiles, SMOG-EATING Tile can help to erase the annual smog footprint they create running their cars and thus help prevent smog-related illness and death.
