Tampa, FL (prHWY.com) October 22, 2011 - This week Interval International hosted its annual Vacation Ownership Investment Conference where hundreds of industry leaders discussed the current state and expected future of the timeshare industry. The main takeaway: the timeshare industry remains viable, even (and perhaps evermore so) in our uncertain economy.

According to a study produced by ARDA's International Foundation and conducted by Ernst & Young, the timeshare industry registered $6.4 billion in total sales volume in 2010 - a 1.6 increase from 2009.
It seems that in uncertain economic times, vacation ownership properties fare better than other travel accommodation options like hotels. In 2010, the average timeshare occupancy was 79%, compared to the hotel industry's 58%.

The study also compiled a host of interesting statistics that industry professionals like timeshare brokers and other resellers may find helpful:

*The most common timeshare resort is the beach resort. Of these, island resorts are the most expensive and boast the highest rates of occupancy. Golf and theme park resorts (like Disney timeshares) tend to be the largest; but haven't fared quite as well as beach resorts in recent years.
*Smaller resorts tend to cost more than larger resorts, while larger resorts charge higher annual maintenance fees.
*The average price of timeshare intervals sold in 2010 was $19,300; the average maintenance fee was $731 and the average fees for studio, one and two plus bedroom units were $588, $619 and $840 respectively.
*California timeshares have the highest interval prices, while Pacific resorts have the highest occupancy rates. Florida timeshares are the most numerous, many of which are much larger in size than those in other regions.

Interval International, the host of the Vacation Ownership Investment Conference is the world's second largest exchange company, specializing in premium resort timeshare exchanges.

As timeshare vacation ownership continues to increase in popularity, many travelers are turning to timeshare resales to save thousands on the purchase of their own timeshare property.
