Joshua Kerrigan works for a marina in Florida. He has a fast-paced, high-stress job that keeps him behind a desk most of the workday. "Sometimes, my phone is ringing, my cell phone is beeping, I'm getting an email message and someone is standing in my office with a question," Joshua Kerrigan says. "It can get stressful." Joshua Kerrigan has a background in medicine, and he worked as a paramedic for three years. He knew the combination of stress and inactivity could be lethal to his health. Rather than let the problem go on, he created an exercise program.
Many people just like Joshua Kerrigan make this same decision each day. Many more people should make this decision soon. Getting outside and stretching your muscles is beneficial both for physical and mental health, and the federal government has been pushing Americans to take up daily exercise for decades.
Joshua Kerrigan started a running program. "I have been a swimmer most of my life, and I thought about creating some sort of swimming program, but I just decided I wanted to do something a little different for my exercise program," he says. Joshua Kerrigan lives close to the Pompano Airpark in Florida, and the park contains a 5-mile running trail. "I just knew this would be perfect for me because it's close to home and it's really beautiful," Joshua Kerrigan says. "I am always really motivated to go out on my run."
People with chronic health conditions should talk to their doctors before starting an exercise program, just so the doctor can make sure underlying medical conditions don't flare up or get worse as a result of the exercise. It's likely that most doctors would recommend exercise for almost everyone, but doctors may create tailored programs based on current health and activity levels. Running and other high-impact activities can be hard on people with arthritis, for example, so doctors might suggest other activities for those people.
"I know running isn't for everyone, but it sure worked for me," Joshua Kerrigan says. "Creating a running program changed my life. I feel a lot more focused and relaxed at work, and I just feel a lot stronger."
