St. Louis Lasik Center Performs Rite of Passage for Patients as Part of Surgery Aftercare
A St. Louis medical center specializing in Lasik surgery helps patients who recently underwent this complex medical procedure embrace life after eyeglasses with a rite of passage ceremony.

"We were finding that many of our patients were so used to a life with glasses that even after the surgery they were still reluctant to let go of their glasses," says Dr. Cunningham, who created and established this rite of passage ceremony with his staff. "I devised this ceremony as a way for people to 'put to rest' their old life and try and embrace their new lifestyle."
The in-office ceremony happens right after a patient has been given a clean bill of health at their after surgery check-up. Patients will be given the opportunity to bury their glasses in a field behind the medical center, toss the glasses into a deep pond, or to take a more destructive path and crush the glasses with a hammer.
"After years of having to resort to putting glasses on in order to see clearly, many of our patients were frustrated and honestly mad at their eyeglasses," head receptionist for Dr. Cunningham's practice, Teri Sparrow said. "This little ceremony is just a quirky way for people to let-go of their anger and frustrations and move forward with their life. When people ask I tell them it's like a form of therapy but only from a Lasik doctor, not a shrink."
The quirky in-office ceremony has gained momentum and popularity since it was introduced to Dr. Cunningham's practice three years ago. People as far as Seattle, Washington have traveled to receive St. Louis Lasik surgery from Dr. Cunningham and take part in the short rite of passage ceremony.
"Friends thought I was crazy traveling over a thousand miles to have Lasik surgery but I looked all over the place and couldn't find a doctor that performed this type of ceremony anywhere near where I lived," said Greg Bringham of Sacramento, California. "People laugh but any doctor who takes the time to invent this type of ceremony shows that they really care about their patients and it is one that I would trust with my most valuable asset - my eyesight."
