The owner, Gretchen Mann-Fritch, grew up at Camp Half Moon when her parents purchased the grounds in 1967. In 1994, she decided to make the New England summer camp co-ed to allow for families to send all of their children to Camp Half Moon.

To the families and campers who come to Camp Half Moon summer after summer, they are known as "The Best Little Camp in the Berkshires." One reason is their size. The camp is small by design, with a camper to counselor ratio of five to one. Each child receives individual attention; the staff gets to know all the campers by name.
