US Chicago, IL, February 16, 2012 - The Saint Patrick's Day Committee of Chicago has announced the details for one of the nation's largest and most popular St. Patrick's Day celebrations.
Normally held on the Saturday before St. Patrick's Day, thanks to a convenient 2012 calendar this year's Chicago St. Patrick's Day parades will occur on St. Patrick's Day itself - March 17, 2012.
St. Patrick's Day events in Chicago include several neighborhood parades. The main parade occurs in Chicago's south side and runs from the intersection of Balboa and Columbus, moving north to the intersection of Columbus and Monroe, running parallel to the lakeshore one major block west of Lakeshore Drive. Buckingham Fountain will be an optimal viewing point as it rests only slightly before the parade's midpoint.
The parade is scheduled to begin at noon.
Due to road closings and significant attendance, public transportation is highly recommended. For those on Blue or Red Line trains, exit at any of the loop stops and walk east to Columbus Drive. For those on Brown, Green, or Orange Line trains, exit at a stop on Wabash and walk east to Columbus Drive. For those who take the Metra Rail, exit at Union Station, and walk seven blocks east to Columbus Drive. CTA bus transport may vary due to holiday events, so it is best to check CTA routes often at http://www.transitchicago.com.
The other major St. Patrick's Day event in Chicago is the annual river dyeing. Patrons can view the river being dyed green for the holiday from various city bridges, but the best viewing zones are on the East side of Michigan Avenue bridge, West side of Columbus Drive bridge, and upper or lower Wacker Drive between Michigan Avenue and Columbus Drive.
