london, United Kingdom (prHWY.com) March 12, 2012 - We have often read in newspapers about fires that break out on commercial premises. Many people lose their lives because of this and it is often seen that enough fire safety training was not provided in the building. So, if you own a commercial site, where lots of people come and go, it's your moral responsibility to do a fire risk assessment and ensure that there is fire security equipment in place. But how do you go about it?

Train your staff to combat fire
A regulation had been passed in 2005, called the Fire Safety Order that makes it a mandate to train all staff to combat fire. The regulation says that one person needs to be appointed who will take care of the fire safety issue of the office building. This person should take the responsibility of making the staff aware of what they should do in the event of a fire. Also, it is his or her responsibility to do a fire risk assessment and inspect sources of fire like gas stoves, air conditioners, ovens, etc and get faulty equipment repaired as soon as possible. It should also be his/her responsibility to regularly organize fire safety training such as fire drills and also install proper, functional fire alarms that are sensitive to the slightest smoke. The fire extinguishers need to be kept up to day

Fire safety training is very important as it can help one to nip a starting fire in the bud, without any need to call the local fire station. The staff should be trained to at least know from where to evacuate the building and how to operate the fire extinguishers.

Undergo a Fire Risk Assessment Process
As part of the Fire safety Order, 2005, you are required to undergo a fire risk assessment module, where the present threats of fire in your building are assessed. Along with it, the quality of fire drill, escape routes, sources of fire, functionality of fire alarms, quality of training given to staffs like handling fire extinguishers etc are evaluated. On the basis of this report, an action report needs to be filed in the areas where you need to improve and these are further highlighted. Based on this report, the fire risk assessment rating is given as to what levels one qualifies for. A further guideline is provided to the company to appoint a responsible person for fire safety, better ways to service fire fighting equipment and also linking up with contractors who would take care of the safety aspect of the building.

This fire risk assessment should be carried out by graduates from the institute of fire engineering and they are qualified to provide you with a correct analysis of the situation. The risk assessment process is undertaken mostly by different fire safety agencies and their services are available all over the country.

So, one should always ensure the safety of one's workers from fire by undertaking fire safety training and also by undergoing the process of risk management. It is imperative in today's world, where fire disasters are so rampant and the damage caused by them is unthinkable.
