45,000 UK University Students Caught Cheating
An investigation carried out by the Independent on Sunday has shown that more than 45,000 students at UK universities have been reprimanded over the past three years for 'academic misconduct' involving various forms of cheating.

The incidents range from mild cases such as accidentally bringing a mobile phone into an exam room, to much more serious accusations of plagiarism and copied coursework. Others involved students passing off essays bought from professional essay writing companies as their own work.
Interestingly, many academic leaders seem to feel that the financial crisis and the rise in tuition fees are partly to blame, as students feel more desperate to gain a high mark in their degree after paying such a high price for it.
Probable rising unemployment and a tough graduate jobs market also contributes to the panic, forcing students to strive for higher and higher grades in order to compete with their peers for jobs after graduation.
Stratos Malamatinas, founder of London-based essay writing firm Oxbridge Essays, says that increasing numbers of students are turning to essay writing companies for help as they are not receiving the support they need from universities.
Unfortunately this can lead to problems if students become so desperate that they try to hand in such essays directly instead of using them to inspire their own work.
