Seattle, WA (prHWY.com) March 28, 2012 - People have a natural instinct to want to be extremely competitive. Sports competitions, academic competitions, even competitions amongst family members are fairly common, but what about a competition amongst lawyers to see who the best e-discovery software user is. That is exactly what lawyers in the San Jose area are doing.

"I was watching TV late one night and saw that local high school students were having a competition between each other to see who could text message faster," said local San Jose attorney Terri Fallows. "I instantly thought of my law students who are working on their internship with me, and how I could use this type of contest with the e-discovery software we use."

E-discovery software programs often help lawyers and law assistants find data, case filings, and information quickly. Using a few keywords, the program will search existing files and law books to find passages and information.

Terri Fallows created a competition that allowed people to race against each other to see who could find the information fastest. A topic or question would be asked, and competitors would race to see who could find the information the fastest.

"The competition started as a little joke in the office," said Fallows. "It quickly spread to the other law offices in the building, and the next thing I knew other local attorneys were contacting me to see if they could join in on the fun."

The first competition in the San Jose area featured 10 local law firms, 50 law assistants, and 20 interns. The competition last 32 rounds, 4 hours, and the winner took home a $50 gift certificate to the local steakhouse, "Bar-none Grill".

"Everything is always so serious in our office. The cases we work on can be pretty intense," said second place finisher, Holly Nought. "This competition really let us let our hair down and have a little fun. I mean who knew that we could have so much fun with an e-discovery program."

A competition featuring 30 local law firms, 10 independent attorneys and their law offices is scheduled for later in the year. The attorneys pulled together and are offering a price that is bigger and better than the local competition - an all-expense paid trip the local spa/resort.

"I really would love to see this competition grow," said Fallows. "I can just imagine having a nationwide competition, and some day having someone crowned the "fastest e-discovery user" in the United States. It'd be amazing."
