Halifax, United Kingdom (prHWY.com) March 29, 2012 - Fashion, by its very nature, is all about inspiring desire in us. We want to look as good as the images we see in the magazines. Some images are so stunning; they stop us in our tracks, and can achieve what all fashion retailers want: the desire to look just like that.

Creating the perfect image

Can anyone create an image that delivers all that? Prodoto, a thriving professional photography studio in the Pennine town of Hebden Bridge, creates 50,000 images each year for major UK and overseas fashion brands which are used in advertising, magazines, brochures and websites. They give us a glimpse into their world and tell us what makes a successful fashion shoot.

How it begins: The brief

Andy Holmes, Senior Account Manager at Prodoto feels that it's vital to have clarity of purpose from the beginning, so everyone understands what the final images should achieve, he tells us:

"It's vital to have a clear client brief: What image should the shoot portray? Where will the shots be used? Do logos need to be highlighted?"

"Styling is the next consideration. Flat styling is hand-styled, bringing clothing to life with movement. Creative styling is great for achieving quirky clothing images, dramatic angles, shadows and reflections. 360 rotations are perfect for showing high detail online."

Andy also considers what else will need to be arranged for the shoot. Does the client need them to collect and return the garments? How many models are needed, and what look should they have? Which props are desirable for creative photography? How should the shoot be lit? Does the shoot require one of the pre-built sets? When all of these questions are answered and the set is prepared, he knows the shoot will run smoothly. At the shoot

The set is built, the stylist advises the hair and make-up artist how the model should look, the props are on hand, and the clothing is steamed and pressed, ready to take centre stage. Everything is just about ready. The client is often present at the shoot to give their approval, but if they can't be there, test shots are carried out to send to them so they can give the go ahead. "This is an essential step" says Andy, "the test shots give the client peace of mind that we've understood and interpreted the brief correctly, and they're going to get exactly what they want."

During the shoot, lighting is frequently adapted to create different moods; meanwhile the fashion photographer uses skill, experience and precision to do what they do best.

The finishing touches

In post-production, a team of Mac operators apply their skills to transform the images into something extra special. Clever techniques are used to show clothing interiors and intricate detail: this is where the art of retouching and colour balancing takes place.

Ready to go Every picture is checked carefully before being approved for release - files are sized according to the needs of the job, and the images are complete and ready for use in print, websites and advertising material.

A successful fashion shoot is well-planned and structured, with everyone briefed and playing their part. A passionate team of professional photographer, assistants and stylists guarantee a high-quality end result: the perfect image.
