Hot interior design trends
Retro furnishings and high gloss finishes in open plan spaces are making a huge comeback in 2012 as part of the hottest trends in Australian interior design.

In a new three part series on James Hardie's Light Home website, Perth based interior designer, Simone Gillespie from Essence Interiors, shares her insights on all the latest trends in bathrooms, kitchens and colours decorating homes around the country.
Citrus colours, grey neutral tones and retro furnishings are once again livening up homes with a vengeance according to interior design expert, Simone Gillespie.
"Instead of neutrals being of a brown tone we are now seeing a neutral background in hues of grey, from very light grey through to dark grey and this forms the background for brighter colours to take centre stage," Gillespie said.
Things are also heating up in the kitchen with new open plan designs, modern high gloss finishes and stylish new doors.
Nowadays, kitchens are fast becoming the best dressed room in the house as well as the hub of the home.
"No longer are the cooks shoved away in a dark corner. We are out in the open cooking, socialising and interacting with family and friends,"Simone said.
Some of the biggest trends in kitchens this season are wallpaper backed splashbacks, painted glass panels, led lit benches and under bench lighting.
Meanwhile, bigger bathrooms, premium shower heads and high tech gadgets are steaming up bathroom interiors for this year.
"We always used to see the bathroom as a purely practical thing,
But these days people are seeing a balance between practicality, quality and comfort," Simone said.
