Local Elders Gain Independence through Technology
Tablets, smartphones, and the latest software technology are enabling the elderly to live independently as long as possible with a vastly improved quality of life.

Frederick, Maryland- Blanche, age 94, is flushed from her latest shopping expedition. Her plunder includes leopard heels, an umbrella, and a bright elegant scarf. The retail therapy would not have been possible without the help of Edenton at Home and its ClearCare technology.
Blanche, one of the first African-American pediatricians in the DC area, suffered a mishap during one of the worst winter storms in February 2010.
Always a sharp dresser, Blanche, was donning a favored outfit when her right leg caved. She felt her worst nightmare came true as she lay out on the floor, alone in her home, helpless with a fractured wrist and a possible concussion.
With no children and her husband at an institution, Blanche was living alone in her 4-bedroom house when the unfortunate fall occurred.
It was hours later when she was found by a family friend who immediately called the emergency services.
When Blanche's power of attorney enlisted the services of Edenton at Home, she could barely recall the details of her hospital stay and weeks of rehabilitation.
But thanks to Amy Rader, RN, GCM, who manages Edenton at Home, and her use of ClearCare, a home care system, Blanche now enjoys the comforts of her own home safely and is not confined in a dreaded nursing home.
The iPad-toting Rader can remotely monitor Blanche's care each day. When visiting Blanche at her home, Rader creates a "care plan" with her using a new technology called ClearCare on the iPad. It allows Amy, concerned family members and friends to monitor the elderly in real time.
Any disturbances in the daily routine are notified through ClearCare technology. Ensuring the elderly are safe at all times.
An everyday routine for Blanche is visiting her husband, who is in a local assisted living, so her caretaker is charged with the transportation. From her office, Rader can see when the visit has happened, when the caretaker arrives at Blanche's house as well as if they went to visit her husband. If Blanche misses an opportunity to see her beloved husband, Rader knows from the ClearCare system that "she had a bad night and wanted to rest a bit" or that "she had visitors."
So when Blanche fell injuriously one evening two weeks ago, Rader knew right away.
Comforting as a daughter would be, Rader set up around-the-clock caregivers for Blanche to nurse her back to health.
Local experts like Rader and her team with Edenton at Home use tablets, telephony, and the ClearCare home care system to track their elderly clients and provide a higher quality of life in these golden years.
Says Rader, "Some challenges of aging are inevitable. We're finding that technology at home promotes independence, and that's what we all want."
