New Technology Helps Maryland Seniors Live Independently at Home
Tablets and smartphones, combined with an innovative home care platform, improve safety and quality-of-life for seniors

improve safety and quality-of-life for seniors
FREDERICK, MD (April, 2012) - According to AARP, 89 percent of people over age 65 want to live independently at home, and new technology is helping local seniors do just that. San Francisco-based software company ClearCare is now partnering with its first home care provider in the state of Maryland - Edenton at Home in Frederick.
ClearCare is a home care system that utilizes tablets, smartphones and the latest software technology to integrate professional home care providers with all other care partners (including seniors themselves and their family members, local and distant); eliminate paper care journals and provide immediate alerts if care tasks are missed; and reduce administration and oversight costs.
CEO Geoffrey Nudd founded ClearCare in mid-2010; his interest in creating technology to benefit seniors was sparked in part by his grandmother's frustration with her cell phone's too-small buttons and complexity, and in part by his professional experience with technology market research that completely ignored people over the age of 55.
ClearCare is growing rapidly today, due to its unique integration of professional home care providers with all other care partners, and the fact that it provides the kind of technology that's increasingly in demand by seniors and caregivers alike:
* According to a 2011 study by UnitedHealth Group, technology to assist seniors and caregivers in the home is a rapidly expanding industry. The study found that there are three technologies that caregivers are most receptive to - personal health record tracking, a caregiving coordination system, and a medication support system - all of which are part of ClearCare.
* More than 43 million Americans serve as unpaid caregivers for adults age 50 and older, and nearly one in four say they have a difficult time coordinating care, according to a 2009 study by the National Alliance for Caregiving in collaboration with AARP.
* A report published in 2008 by AARP showed that both seniors and family caregivers seek new technology products as way to keep themselves or their loved ones living at home as long as possible.
By example, Blanche, age 94, is an Edenton at Home client who benefits from the use of ClearCare technology. One of the first African-American pediatricians in the D.C. area, one of her worst nightmares came true when she fell in her home. She lay on the floor alone for hours until a family friend found her and called for medical help.
Today, thanks to Amy Rader, RN, who manages Edenton at Home, and her use of ClearCare, Blanche continues to live independently at home but with added peace of mind. The iPad-toting Rader can remotely monitor Blanche's care each day. During home visits, Blanche and Rader together update Blanche's care plan using ClearCare on the iPad. This technology allows Rader and Blanche's other caregivers to monitor her in real time and be aware of any disturbances in her daily routine.
Says Rader, "Some challenges of aging are inevitable. We're finding that technology at home promotes independence, and that's what we all want."
