These people were once thought of as the rulers of the planet Earth, and they let everyone know that. People in today's culture want to know how they did it, and what made people so afraid of them. The answer is simple - a torture device that was similar to what people nowadays sleep in.

"What people don't realize is that antique iron bed they sleep in every night, well it originated as an ancient Roman torture device", said research Benny Hill. "That ought to make people sleep well at night."

It turns out the ancient Romans were very fond of form of torture known as stretch therapy. This type of torture would take people and stretch their limbs out till the limbs popped out of their joints. It was thought to be extremely painful, but highly effective.

"We are estimating that the ancient Romans may have used this type of torture as their primary method to gaining worldwide dominance" said Hill.

The discovery came when Hill was researching for his newest book titled "The Roman Side They Don't Want You to Know About". The book highlighted facts about the ancient Romans that have been overlooked or hidden throughout history.

"It's amazing what people will do to change history", said research assistant Jennifer Tam. "I mean, you can't change what happened, but you can hide it. The ancient Romans were certainly good at doing just that."

Benny Hill discovered the link between torture and antique iron beds, and posted it on his blog as a musing of the day. Immediately after posting it his blog had 5,000 hits, which is 2,000 hits above the daily normal amount.

"There was a huge interest in this new discovery", said Hill. "I don't know if it was the disturbing connection to our day to day life, or if it was just interesting to these people."

The reaction to the news was mixed. Commenters on the blog left notes talking about how shocked they were, and some left notes expressing disbelief in their findings.

"I don't know how many people really believed me", said Hill. "But I do know for a fact that sales of antique iron bed frames rose 200% since I posted that. So people either believe it or really superstitious because they are getting rid of their bed frames like they are going out of style. That's just silly to me."
