Seattle, WA (prHWY.com) May 5, 2012 - The 'steampunk' craze has taken the sci-fi and fantasy worlds by storm. There are hundreds of books published every year that fall under the category of steampunk, but it isn't the books that are attracting people's attention - it's the conventions.

Steampunk conventions are popping up all over the country. People dress up in clothing that looks as if it dates back to the early 1800s, and they gather around discussing, debating and talking about the latest books, movies, and TV shows that revolve around the steampunk genre. One steampunk convention held in Dallas is taking the idea of dressing up a step further and making it a part of a challenge at the convention.

"What we've done is we spent the past year collecting articles of clothing from thrift stores", explained event planner Tammy Greg. "All the clothing resembles something that would be appropriate attire for a steampunk convention. We put all the clothing in the room, give contestants 5 minutes, and see what they come up with."

The contest was thought up after Tammy Greg was watching an episode of "America's Next Top Model". The contestants were supposed to create a look out of clothing that was left around. Greg thought it would be interesting to see what people would be able to come up with, but only with a steampunk theme.

Tammy Greg teamed up with several local thrift stores, including Pass It On. These thrift stores kept an eye out for clothing that would fit the steampunk theme, and set it aside for the convention.

"We thought it was a little weird that someone would ask for clothing that looked like the 1800s", said Pass It On owner Tony Stumps. "But the truth is this clothing rarely sells unless it's for a school play, costume event, or Halloween. So we were more than willing to pass it on to the convention."

Contestants will battle it out for a chance to win a variety of prizes including passes to next year's convention, restaurant gift certificates, and bookstore gift cards. The winners will be determined by a vote that lasts the entire convention.

"I absolutely cannot wait to see what people come up with", said Greg. "It should be a really interesting experience. We also have some really cool and odd pieces of clothing so anything can happen. Truth is steampunk people are extremely creative so who knows we could be seeing some costumes that look like they deserve to be on the runway of Paris."
