Kahnawake Casino Referendum 2012 - "No" Dominates "Yes" With Little Margin

Residents of Kahnawake, the South Shore community, have rejected the proposal of casino building in the area, despite lucrative offers made by the owners.

Kahnawake, Canada (prHWY.com) May 8, 2012 - "No To Casino"- Residents of Kahnawake, the South Shore community, have rejected the proposal of casino building in the area, despite lucrative offers made by the owners. The referendum held on Saturday, April 28, 2012, has shown a close contest between the Yes (49.3%) and No (50.7%). Even the projected profit upto $50 million per year and the dividend $1,000 per person per year couldn't win over the hearts of Kahnawake people. However, it doesn't have any effect over the online casino operations.

It's the third time in 18 years, when the residents clearly go against building a casino in the area; however, the difference between "Yes" and "No" is decreased, with 57% "No" in 2003 and 50.7% this year.

"We are 96% financially dependent on federal and provincial support and we want to lower that dependency; casino would be of great help," said Mr. Mike Delisle Jr., the Grand Chief of Kahnawake. The result of referendum is a clear defeat for him and other 9 members of band council. He also refused to accept the casino idea as nasty, as many opponents are rendering it to be.
The allies of Delisle have spread flyers around the town carrying statements like "Make Kahnawake financially independent," "Secure your future by voting Yes." The opponents also promoted their campaign by strongly condemning the casino opening and inviting all residents to say "No" for keeping Kahnawake clean, free from any casino.

Youth of Kahnawake, under 18, who couldn't participate in the voting process, also protested against the casino building. They are viewing casino project as a beginning of prostitution, alcohol, and drug business to be spread in the community that will paralyze the youth and give rise to poverty.

"The dividend is an open bribe that has brought the competition closer between Yes and No vote, compared to 2003 referendum," says Kenneth Deer, the editor of Eastern Door. He further says that the poverty level, here in Kahnawake, is forcing people to agree with the casino idea, which means the community will get $5 million extra per year in the form of dividends.

The residents of Kahnawake are still not clear about the dividend distribution, that's creating doubts in their minds. The current referendum results are not supporting the casino building in Kahnawake; however, this proposition is not against the online free casinos concept, as many online casinos are offering gambling opportunities for Kahnawake people.
