Bangkok, Thailand, FL (prHWY.com) May 15, 2012 - Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, May 15, 2012 - Ho Chi Minh City, also known as Saigon is essentially the capitol of the south, even though Vietnam has only one capital Hanoi in the north. Ho Chi Minh is definitely a place for the more experienced and brave traveler. Between the insane traffic and lack of spoken English, arriving in this city can feel more like landing on another planet. Downtown seems to be the only foreigner friendly part of the city and even there you can feel like a real outsider.
Ho Chi Minh and Vietnam in general is poorer than Thailand and walking the streets of this city you can feel just that. Scams are ramped and petty theft is recently higher than ever with recent inflation hitting hard. Since big cities are not our thing we did not stay long. District one is supposed to be the financial and wealthier area of the city. You can find a lot of business men wearing suits and ties as well as some nice restaurants to dine at. Ho Chi Minh has some good museums and monuments that celebrate it's 2000 year known history.
For travel purposes Saigon is often the gateway into the country. Staying near the train station can be a convenience or having a connecting flight skipping over the city too can be a good idea. Overall, if you are coming to Vietnam, Saigon will be more remembered as an experience rather than a holiday destination.
Places In Asia - Getting around Saigon, also known as Ho Chi Minh can be somewhat of a challenge to any newcomer to this city. Frankly speaking the traffic is horrendous. It seems like at least 99 out of 100 vehicles on the road are motor bikes. There are very few traffic lights and instead they have many roundabouts where cyclist weave in an out amongst each other to get to where they need to go. Simply crossing the road feels like you are taking your life in your hands.
Ho Chi Minh City Attractions - The best way to cross the road is to do so alongside a Vietnamese person. It will sometimes seem as if they are walking out into traffic to commit suicide, however they do it confidently and at rhythmic pace and somehow always make it to the other side. Even if you are a motor bike pro I wouldn't recommend hitting the streets until you at least familiarize yourself with the city a little bit. It just seems like there are millions things that could go wrong being a foreigner alone on a bike here.
The best way to get around is by taxi. They are safe and cheap. You can get across the whole city for just a few dollars. Have your hotel call for one in advance or flag one down off the street. Only use Mai Linh and Vinasun taxis which are easy to spot as they look clean and commercialized. If you do not use these taxis you could be in for ride!
