Indo-Bangla collaboration to solve Tiger census problem

The problem regarding the exact count of Royal Bengal Tigers residing in the forests of Sunderban will soon be sorted out with the joint efforts of Bangladesh and India.

New Delhi, India (prHWY.com) May 16, 2012 - New Delhi: Kolkata: The problem regarding the exact count of Royal Bengal Tigers residing in the forests of Sunderban National Park will soon be sorted out with the joint efforts of Bangladesh and India. The governments of both the countries have decided to jointly conduct the survey of the forest in order to present the exact population of tigers on UNESCO World Heritage Site, by this July.

If required the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) will help the Bangladesh Sunderban officials with technical expertise for conducting the survey. It will also be attempted to take up the tiger census simultaneously on either side of the forest using common methodology, to achieve the desired results.

The proposal initiated by Mr. Jairam Ramesh as Union environment and forest minister and approved by both the Governments -is a deliberate effort to erase the problem of tiger census and also emphasizes on the need for sincere efforts by both sides to stop illegal hunting of the specie.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh formalized the program through a specified Indo-Bangladesh Bilateral Environmental Treaty for the Sunderbans which will help in tackling the sensitive problem of ecosystem collectively in a more effective way.
