Nagpur, India (prHWY.com) May 16, 2012 - The only cure for advanced liver failure is liver replacement. Liver transplant in India extends life expectancy and infuses unprecedented quality of life. Patients with acute or chronic liver failure lead to shrinkage of the liver and can be benefited from liver transplant. Liver transplant is recommended when the chance of patient survival drops below 48 months. The general scenario of the transplant is One would be free from all the complications and will be leading a fairly normal life.

Your liver is an organ that lies in the upper right side of your abdomen (stomach). Your liver has many functions including removing waste products from your blood. It breaks down your blood so your body can better use the nutrients. Your liver also helps control your blood clotting. If your liver is failing, it is no longer able to break down food, repair cells and clear your body of toxins. This can lead to swelling of the abdomen and legs, drowsiness, blood infections and even coma. You may already be seeing a doctor who is monitoring your condition and liver function. If your doctor feels that your liver disease is progressing, you may be referred for a liver transplant. Evaluation of each patient and pre and post-transplant care are handled by a multidisciplinary team of transplantation surgeons, gastroenterologists, experts in infectious disease, nephrologists, cardiologists and staff from nursing, psychiatry and anesthesiology.

In a liver transplant procedure the diseased liver is removed completely by surgery and replaced with either a new part liver or whole liver. Blood vessels and bile duct are connected with the patient's structures and blood is allowed to flow through the new organ. This takes approximately 8 to 12 hours (longer for living donor transplants). Patient is managed in the ICU for 2-3 days and 2-3 weeks in a dedicated special ward. The length of recovery after surgery will depend greatly on the strength of the individual patient, but a minimum of a few days in intensive care and about four weeks in the hospital can be expected. Routine follow-up will include monthly blood tests and monitoring of blood pressure by a local physician with annual or semi-annual checkups at the transplant center. Any illness should be reported to the doctor immediately as the suppression of the immune system increases the danger from any infection.

Prognosis for a liver transplant in India is quite good. 1-year survival is 83%, 5-year survival is 76% and 10-year survival is 66%. There are many important lifestyle changes that you can do to maintain your health. For example, work with a nutritionist who can help you figure out the best way to meet your nutritional needs without gaining too much weight. Being overweight can lead to diabetes and high blood pressure, which can be detrimental to your liver. Talk with your transplant coordinator about an exercise program. Resume exercises, such as walking, running, swimming and bicycling, slowly as your body heals from the surgery. Remember that your new liver is your second chance at life. Do everything you can to stay healthy.
