Memorial Day Sparks Warning From San Luis Obispo DUI Lawyer
Memorial Day is known for sunshine, barbecues, family and fun. But when that fun goes too far, you could quickly find yourself in one of the worst situations of your life.

No Tolerance For Drinking & Driving
Every available officer will be on the roads looking for drunk drivers and others who are a danger to themselves, others or private or public property.
"The main thing I'd like people, especially the younger people in our community, to remember, is that even small bad decisions can turn into huge, long-term problems," said San Luis Obispo DUI attorney Jeffrey Stulberg. "If you're going to drink at all Memorial Weekend, your best option is to not drive at all, even the next day as alcohol can remain in your bloodstream and still get you a DUI."
This means if you drink on Friday night and drive to the grocery store on Saturday night, even after a full night's sleep, breakfast and lunch, alcohol may still be in your system. And if SLOPD stops you, you could find yourself on your way to jail despite feeling completely sober.
"I've seen it a number of times where a driver has been charged with a DUI more than 24 hours after they stopped drinking," Stulberg said. "And with planned DUI checkpoints throughout the county, you don't want to risk having to explain to a lawyer, your boss and your family why you got a DUI the day after you were drinking."
Memorial Weekend is a celebratory time for many locals, especially the student body. Large quantities of alcohol are consumed, typically downtown, at one of the county camping venues or at house parties. Many older residents are aware of this party atmosphere and choose to stay off the roads during the weekend.
"Sadly we've lost some young people in our community in DUI-related accidents, which serve as a constant reminder of why law enforcement takes this and other holiday weekends so serious," Stulberg said. "Have fun, be responsible and don't drive."
