Travis, TX (prHWY.com) May 22, 2012 - 21 May 2012 USA: Bactrim when taken in combination with antihypertensive drugs namely Calcium Channel Blockers (CCBs) results in a drastic decrease in your blood pressure levels causing hypotension complications and also stimulate shock in geriatric patients thereby requiring urgent hospitalization.

The use of Bactrim to treat Duodenal ulcers caused by H. Pylori and Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) seen in HIV infection, in addition to cure various bacterial infections is well-known.
Dr. David Juurlink said that Macrolide antibiotics such as Bactrim is the most preferred and widely used antibiotic medication across the globe and in general are very well-tolerated by wide range of individuals. But, what form the major cause of concern are its detrimental effects on health observed due to several significant interactions of this medication with other drugs.
The study was conducted in individuals who were more than or 66 years old and were treated with calcium channel blockers to control their high blood pressure. And, later analysis was carried out in individuals about their consumption of antibiotics on or before taking CCBs in all those who were hospitalized.
And not to be surprised, around 7100 individuals were found to be undergoing medical care in hospitals for either hypotension or shock, on treatment with CCBs. While Bactrim and Erythromycin were found to increase the risk of low blood pressure by 2% and 4% respectively in all those who took CCBs, no risk of low blood pressure was observed in those taking Azithromycin antibiotic in conjugation with CCBs.
The risk of being hospitalized for low blood pressure complication was found to be higher on using calcium channel blockers and antibiotics together, in older patients as compared to those who were slightly younger.
Hence, the use of Bactrim with CCBs should be avoided and one should always consult their medical professional before taking any two drugs in conjugation, as every drug is associated with a possibility of interaction with other.
The use of Bactrim to treat Duodenal ulcers caused by H. Pylori, Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) seen in HIV infection and peptic ulcers in addition to cure various bacterial infections is well-known.
