Houston, TX (prHWY.com) May 27, 2012 - All-Tex Home Improvement Services - As homeowners clean up after weekend's flood, a local contractor said today that a faulty roof could defeat efforts to fight water damage.

Houses lucky enough to survive the Houston downpour should have their TX roofing systems checked, advised All-Tex Home Improvement Services.

"In many cases, signs of water damage can take years to manifest and recurrent drainage problems may be suspect," the company said.

Earlier special weather statement was spot on

Just as the National Weather Service predicted last week, "severe weather conditions" did hit Texas Friday evening until Saturday morning.

Wind-driven rains turned creeks into rivers, ABC 13 news described. The downpour also left motorists stranded as waters reached 6 feet deep at the Highway 90 and Highway 99 intersection.

Fox News reported the there were no damages recorded yet for tornado touchdowns. Flooding concerns however remain for areas near Chiger, Coward's, and Clear Creeks, the network confirmed.

Residents in Katy, Richmond, and Shepherd also had to busy themselves cleaning up and fixing home areas hit by hail.

TX contractor bares Houston roofing oversights that worsen water damage

Choosing a roofing system won't be as easy as changing hats, All-Tex Home Improvement Services said.

A few mistakes can subject the home to repetitive water intrusion problems and can make some properties more prone to flooding.

The contractor enumerated the oversights to include the following:

* Improper orientation. Roofs may be positioned in way that they shed water at a flood-prone area or may not be able to effectively flush out water at all.

An example for the latter is a 180-degree flat roof, said the company. A system that intends to use the roof as a deck still needs to be angled slightly to facilitate waterflow.

* Clogged drain. Rainwater that travels from the gutters needs to be flushed out from the system. It may however get re-introduced or lead to a rise in water levels in the yard when the drain is clogged.

If there are water puddles in the yard even if the sun is shining, you have a drainage problem, the contractor alerted homeowners.

* Multiple roof heights. Function and form should go together, the home improvement expert stressed. However, if a home has an overly complicated roofing system, there are more chances for water problems to crop up in flashings and valleys.

Different pitches combined in a single roof tend to create maintenance difficulties and lend rise to moisture retention problems, the company said.

Homeowners invited to call for a free assessment

Fixing a roof after a flood is never easy for the average homeowner, All-Tex Home Improvement Services sympathized.

To help Texas locals repair their roofs and recover from the damage, the company said it will continue to hold out on-site roof checks for free.

The survey comes with a no-obligations price quote and consultation.
