Aachen cathedralis a building of great historical, architectural and religious importance. It was referred to as the Kaiser dom of Aachen. It was built by Charlemagne in 805 AD. Aachen Cathedral's dynamic design was highly authoritative on German church architecture. It is one of the oldest churches in Germany and contains a wealth of treasures from the early medieval period. Charlemagne, the first Holy Roman Emperor, began building his Palatine Chapel in 786AD. He ahs also made a UNESCO world Heritage site in 1978; the Palatine Chapel ahs been described as a "masterpiece of Carolingian architecture" the Palatine Chapel was designed by Odo of Metz. He based it on the Byzantine church of San Vitale in Ravenna,Italy.
