Portable Kitchen Island Inspires Invention of the Year

Invent Now!, a leader in bringing ideas to life, announced the winner of this year's Invention of the Year contest. Winner is 9 year old Tommie Winslow, of Austin, Texas, and his invention of the Egg PeelerZ.

Seattle, WA (prHWY.com) June 21, 2012 - Invent Now!, a leader in bringing ideas to life, announced the winner of this year's Invention of the Year contest. Winner is 9 year old Tommie Winslow, of Austin, Texas, and his invention of the Egg PeelerZ. His device, solves the age old problem of how to peel hard boiled eggs without getting eggshell everywhere or gouging out chunks of egg while trying to scrape off the shell.

In an interview, Winslow admitted that it was the portable kitchen island in his home which inspired his invention. "I was watching my mom peel eggs for egg salad one day, and saw that she was getting egg shells everywhere, and that the eggs looked all horrible when she was done." Winslow went on to recount how his frustrated mother finally gave up and swooped the entire mess from the top of the portable kitchen island into the garbage and made peanut butter sandwiches for lunch that day instead.

Lottie Nyman, star chef and restaurateur explained the process of boiling and peeling eggs, which confirmed that it was indeed not as easy as it seemed. If not boiled just right, the membrane between the egg and shell can stick to the egg white as it cooks, making it hard to get a clean peel.

Winslow then had an idea, and after tinkering in his workshop (a space in the family garage for all his inventions), he came up with a device that is simply amazing. He called it the Egg PeelerZ, and it works by puncturing a small hole into one end of the egg through the egg shell, and then pumping air into a sealed chamber in which the egg is held. "Air is then pushed into the egg between the shell and the cooked egg, loosening it," explained Winslow, who looked rather pleased with his invention.

Indeed, after trying it out, a simple crack of the shell was all that was needed to peel off the entire egg shell in one large piece, leaving behind a pristine hard boiled egg. Invent Now! put the Egg PeelerZ to rigorous testing before the product made the short list of this year's inventions, and then it was up to public voting to see who won.

As young Timmie Winslow stands holding a check for $25,000.00 and a licensing deal with a large manufacturer and distributer of kitchen goods, he smiles and whispers to the camera how he doesn't even like eating eggs.
