Grocery Store Chain Owner Uses Scavenger Hunt to Motivate Employees
Many people assume that running a multi-site grocery store would be boring, but not for one grocery store chain based out of Iowa.

"My employees sit day in and day out looking at a computer screen that houses the entire CMMS software program", said Greg Hughes, owner of the Food for Thought Grocery Store chain. "I want to encourage them to keep working, while not making their job boring or dull."
Greg Hughes takes several clues and places them throughout the entire CMMS software program. When employees properly do their job they will come upon these clues and need to follow the hints to discover what the prize is.
"Sometimes it's just a little prize like a gift card to the coffee stand down the street", said Hughes. "Other times it's a free tank of gas, free lunch, or an extra day off of work."
Hughes bases the prizes for the scavenger hunt off of how well the employees have worked during the past month. If the employees are working extra hard and everything is running smoothly with the CMMS software program, Hughes will issue huge prizes like time off of work, free lunches, and such. If the employees are slacking a little but need motivation than it is a smaller prize.
"I haven't gotten to a situation where the CMMS software program is the reason for my downward turn in revenue", explained Hughes. "So I don't really have a backup plan for if something goes wrong and I have to stop playing games and force them to get to work."
Two months ago, Hughes used the system to plan a surprise employee evaluation for his hard-working employees. He tucked in several notes to the employees to see him in his office immediately, and when they found the note they were treated to a surprise evaluation.
"Normally I require my employees to prepare for the evaluation ahead of time", said Hughes. "However, since the evaluation was extremely positive, I didn't think they would mind hearing good stuff about them."
The employees at Food for Thought love the idea of the scavenger hunt. In fact, many look forward to it being a part of their workweek.
"I love finding little surprises in the CMMS software", said Joel Hardy, a 2 year employee of the store. "It just adds something fun to the day!"
