Seattle, WA (prHWY.com) June 25, 2012 - The every-increasing price of gas has caused many people to consider alternative types of fuel. Popular choices include corn-based gasoline, or hybrid cars, but one man in Vancouver, Washington is taking his quest to save money of fuel to the extreme. He has vowed to only drive a golf car for a year.

"I was tired of forking over so much money to these big oil companies", said James Canary. "I wanted to fight the system in my own way. I couldn't afford to purchase a brand new hybrid car, and I couldn't afford to not have a mode of transportation. So golf car it is."

The term golf car is often used by manufacturers who wish to attract a new type of clientele. These golf cars look similar to golf carts, but in some cases they have been designed to meet the safety standards required for cars.

"Some of the golf cars we have use airbags in case of an accident", explained golf car seller, Todd Gringo. "We have cars that come with seatbelts, GPS systems, larger wheels for road safety, and other items. Think of a car but only smaller. That's what we carry."

James Canary plans on driving only a golf car around Vancouver for a year to see how much money he saves in gas. Vancouver, Washington recently passed a law that allows individuals to try these smaller car versions around town. Previously, it was considered 'unsafe' to drive them, and therefore people had to stick to small back roads and housing complexes.

"I am really interested to see just how much money this experiment will save me", said Canary. "I think it I save enough I may never go back to a regular car again! Who knows, I certainly don't!"

The only place that James Canary is not allowed to drive the golf car is on the highway. Currently, highway driving is not allowed in these golf cars as the vehicle is unable to reach speeds that are considered safe for highway driving.

"Currently, the golf cars are only able to reach speeds of 50-60 miles per hour", said Gringo. "This makes highway driving difficult as the speed required can be about 70-75 miles per hour. The Transportation Safety Board just has not approved it yet."

People are currently in works to create a highway-safe golf car. However, that is still years away.

"You'll be seeing people driving these golf cars in a few year", said Canary. "You can bet on it!"
