The first Batch of Hindu pilgrims comprises of 1,469 males, 476 females, 108 children and 241 sadhus who left in 69 vehicles including 51 buses and 18 light motor vehicles accompanied by security staff of CRPF. Commenting on the beginning of Amarnath pilgrimage trek, Nawang Rigzin Jora, state tourism minister said "The yatra has begun this year. We pray for a peaceful yatra to all the pilgrims. A batch of pilgrims has been flagged off here marking the beginning of Amarnath yatra."
Last year more than 6 lakh pilgrims visited the holy cave to worship almighty Lord Shiva who dwells here in the form of an ice stalagmite as per the mythical belief. This year around 3.5 lakh pilgrims have been enrolled for the yatra which will conclude in August on the day of Raksha Bandhan.
Amarnath cave has a huge significance in Hindu mythology as Lord Shiva uttered the secrets of human creation to his consort Parvati in this cave. The ice stalagmite housed within the cave is considered to be an embodiment of Lord Shiva and waxes and wanes with the phase of moon. From past two decades, Amarnath Yatra has been constantly surrounded with the militant threats but that does not prevent the sheer determination of pilgrims.
