Part of the UMA revolution in education: Suranjana Joarder
Usha Martin Academy (UMA), with its innovative teachers and education techniques makes 'mundane' subjects like Economics engrossing. Suranjana Joarder talks about her classes and her love for the subject.

She loves Economics and makes it interesting for her students at the Usha Martin Academy in Kolkata. "I have been part of the UMA since its inception," she says, the pride reflecting in her voice.
Seeing UMA grow, Joarder takes a keen interest in student activities and heads the student union. "I love being with the students, both inside and out of the classroom," she says. Their vibrant inquisitiveness keeps her on her toes. "While I thoroughly enjoy teaching them, I learn a lot from them too. They are young and full of energy."
The sessions in her classrooms are always interactive and fascinating, never one sided affairs where the students can be seen nodding off to sleep out of sheer boredom. Economics is not a dull and boring subject. It is the people who make it so.
"Economics is about us. It is not something difficult or incomprehensible," she can be heard telling her students. In fact, the subject is so contemporary that it is directly related to what is going on in our world. At UMA, students are engrossed in reading and surfing the net because they need to be informed on what is going on. Current affairs are discussed in the classroom.
"They are doing a professional course and must know what is happening. For example, right now we are so worried about inflation. It is regularly in the news. How do they cope with it, how do their parents cope? These are questions that come up in the class." Economics is not all about mugging formulae. True students of the subject must know how to apply the formulae they learn and the practical aspects of it all. How the formula originated, and when, where and how it could be applied.
Earlier, Economics was considered to be gender specific - not a subject for the women folk. Well, no more. "Women know better," says Suranjana with a smile. "They handle budgets." Plain and simple.
This energetic workaholic young lady has a simple formula to make her subject engrossing. She uses a lot of role playing in her classes. "We have learnt Economics in a way that seems mundane. If we understand what is in Economics, it is not dull," she says quite emphatically.
For her students, she has some very practical advice. "Do your best and excel in whatever you do. Always listen to your heart. The heart saves the head."
