Eighty percent of a person's lifetime sun exposure is acquired before age 18, and severe sunburns before age 18 can cause melanoma later in life. Patients need to be vigilant about changes to their skin, such as a new mole, skin lesion, or a change in an existing mole. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer; however, 95 percent of all skin cancers are basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma, both of which are the less serious, or non-melanoma, skin cancers. These skin cancers have a better than 95 percent cure rate if detected and treated early. Malignant melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer, which, if allowed to grow can spread to other parts of the body. However, when found early and treated, the cure rate is nearly 100 percent, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.
