Irvine, CA (prHWY.com) July 5, 2012 - Orange County, CA - Before the dangers associated with over-exposure to the sun were well documented, older generations courted the sun, slathering their bodies with baby oil before lying out in the backyard sun to work on a sought-after tan. Dermatologist Dr. Charles R. Sexton of Irvine sees many patients who are worried about skin cancer due to early and lengthy exposure to the sun. Dr. Sexton says, "My typical patient is well aware of the risks associated with the sun, and [summer] is the time they take stock of new lesions such as precancers and pigmented/colored spots that may herald the development of skin cancer."

Eighty percent of a person's lifetime sun exposure is acquired before age 18, and severe sunburns before age 18 can cause melanoma later in life. Patients need to be vigilant about changes to their skin, such as a new mole, skin lesion, or a change in an existing mole. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer; however, 95 percent of all skin cancers are basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma, both of which are the less serious, or non-melanoma, skin cancers. These skin cancers have a better than 95 percent cure rate if detected and treated early. Malignant melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer, which, if allowed to grow can spread to other parts of the body. However, when found early and treated, the cure rate is nearly 100 percent, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.

In his practice at Orange County General & Cosmetic Dermatology, Dr. Sexton's top priority is the optimal health and appearance of his patients' skin. His years of clinical experience, along with the most advanced techniques for both medical and cosmetic dermatology, have prepared him to treat even the most unusual and comprehensive skin disorders. For patients concerned about skin cancer, several different types of surgical procedures are used to remove melanomas and most basal and squamous cell carcinomas. The treatment chosen depends upon the type of skin cancer, the area of the body affected, and the depth of the lesion.

Dr. Sexton is a board-certified dermatologist, a diplomat of the American Board of Dermatology, and a member of the American Academy of Dermatology. After graduating at the top of his class from Wright State University Medical School in Dayton, OH, he completed his residency at the prestigious Cleveland Clinic, where he trained in surgical and pathology disciplines. Dr. Sexton is on staff at Hoag Presbyterian Hospital and Irvine Regional Hospital and Medical Center and has trained residents from both UCSD and UC Irvine dermatology programs. He can be reached at 949.679.6900.
