london, United Kingdom (prHWY.com) July 5, 2012 - Even though teak garden furniture is made from a wood that will withstand the ravages of the elements all year long, after awhile even teak furniture can begin to look tired and abused. Do not throw away your teak garden furniture because it has discoulored and turned grey. Instead restore it and breathe new life into you old friend. You can make them attractive and appealing all over again.

After a while the sun will cause untreated teak furniture to turn a dull grey colour. Some people find this very disturbing, but the truth is, the piece has not been compromised it has merely discoulored. You can easily restore it back to its original beauty and enjoy it for many years to come.
After your teak garden furniture has become weathered you will use a two part cleansing solution to breathe new life into it. Generally the solution will have one portion that contains a caustic soda and another that involves something like phosphoric acid.

You never use these types of chemicals without wearing rubber gloves to protect your hands and goggles to protect your eyes. You should note that the cleanser for the teak garden furniture will not damage your grass but it may cause discolouration or damage to painted surfaces, plastic pieces, or even your patio. Be sure that you have the teak furniture positioned so that you can use the cleanser without inadvertently getting it onto other objects.

The first step to cleaning your teak furniture will be to take a garden hose and wet the surface of the wood. You will then apply the first cleaner on a small area of the piece. You never want to allow the cleaner to dry on the surface of your teak furniture, so for this reason it is worth working a small area and allowing the areas you clean to overlap. You simply scrub the base cleaner that has the caustic soda in it into the surface with a soft bristled scrubbing brush or a pad that you might clean stovetops with. The wood should turn a deep brown colour when the cleanser is applied. Rinse the cleaner off completely. Then apply the second portion of the cleaner that contains the acid in exactly the same way that you applied the first portion. The wood will now appear lighter and you should rinse it thoroughly when finished.

You can repeat the process with the cleaner until you have caused the wood of the teak furniture to lighten to a shade which you are comfortable with. When you have completed this process, it is possible to apply a protector or sealer to reduce the amount of weathering that happens to the wood over the next few years.
