Firefox OS - the new kid on the block for Mobile app development

Mozilla is all set to lock horns with the likes of iOS, Android and Windows Phone with the announcement of Firefox OS for mobile devices.

Hicksville, NY (prHWY.com) July 10, 2012 - Originally known as 'Boot to Gecko' project, Mozilla is all set to jump in the mobile market with the announcement of ''Firefox OS''. They have joined hands with Chinese phone manufacturers TCL Communication Technology and ZTE. They will be using Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. This is the same kind which has been used in Samsung Galaxy S III.

According to Mozilla, it will be a fully open mobile ecosystem and apps will be created with HTML 5. Firefox OS handsets are projected to be available in the early 2013. Telefonica will be launching its first handset in Brazil. It will reach in US and UK markets later that year.

Firefox OS will be made available in low end segment first. The cost of such handsets would be somewhere around $100. Eventually it will move to the mid and the high-end segments.

The buzz in the market is that Firefox mobile OS offers much more than Android, particularly for the pocket friendly handset segment. The operating system is more 'open source' than the Android OS. Firefox's timing seems to be just about perfect. According to Matthew Key, Telefonica Chief Executive, Firefox OS is a better budget experience than Android."

Developers will have an easy time porting their HTML 5 apps to mobile OS. Firefox OS will have a deep integration of social networks too. For users it is great news as they will be able to easily manage their social networks and post updates. Thanks to the HTML 5 base of the OS, Google Maps will be the same as one gets on the pc.

At the Telefonica Digital conference, where the handset was shown using the Firefox OS, officials described it as running well with fewer resources compared to some of their rivals.
