Los Angeles, CA (prHWY.com) July 10, 2012 - Respiratory system is one of the most important biological systems in humans. It is complex and performs a very important function. It is necessary for aerobic cellular respiration process that enables our bodies to produce energy from food. The process of producing energy requires oxygen and hence the respiratory system has to be perfect at all times to be able to supply the necessary oxygen to the body cells.

When you breathe in, oxygen diffuses in to the blood system where it is absorbed by the body cells. The process of exhaling expels carbon dioxide and water vapor from the body system therefore the breath in and breath out cycle cleans blood while at the same time supplies body cells with oxygen.

There are a number of respiratory system facts which need to be mastered. They include;

* Breathing in for one minute takes in to the lungs about 6.15 liters of air.
* In a single minute we breathe 9 to 20 times. Therefore a single breath brings in to the lungs an equivalent of a half a liter of air.
* In a single day, we breathe in and out 22,000 times. The respiratory system moves about 8.5 m3 of air.
* The breathing mechanism in humans is tidal since it brings in air while at the same time sends out air the same way it has come.
* In a whole day it is estimated that the water vapor we inhale is approximately equivalent to a half a liter.
* That the breathing mechanism is initiated by the diaphragm when it expands and contracts. When it expands, it increases the volume of the chest cavity making the air pressure to drop hence a sudden rush of air into the lungs to fill the vacuum.
* The expansion of the diaphragm removes air from the lungs thus enabling us to breathe out.
* Air is normally filtered through the nasal passage referred to as the windpipe where it is filtered heated and moistened.

Lungs

* It is one of the main part of the respiratory system which facilitates absorption and removal of carbon dioxide from the blood.
* It is a dense network of tubules that are connected and whose main job is to transport oxygen to various cells in the body.
* Lungs have about 700 millions of alveoli which are tiny air bags that facilitate the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide to and from the minute blood capillaries through the process referred to as diffusion.
* When the lungs air tubes constricts they inhibit supply of oxygen through the lungs and this is what brings about asthmatic condition.

These and many more facts about a single breath we make are what keep us alive.
