A Period for the Humble and the Devout
Ramadan is a time of peace and tranquility, of prayers, fasting and remembering the Almighty. It is a period of atonement of past sins and seeking His forgiveness. It is also a phase when the gates of heaven are kept open always for the humble

What is the reason behind this? It is because Allah has decreed that whoever fasts during Ramadan will be blessed and all his past sins will be forgiven. And any able bodied healthy Muslim who does not fast even for a single day during this period will be cursed. Thus Muslims treat this period as a penitence for past sins and a time of cleansing the soul and self. Prayers are offered at periodic intervals and all should make an attempt to read the full Quran at least once during this period. Almsgiving as well as mass feeding is a part of the rite of Ramadan so that the poor and the needy can also partake in the festivities of Eid, the day following Ramadan.
When is Ramadan2012? It is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and starts on the 21st of July with the sighting of the new moon. It will end on 19th of August, also after the new moon is seen. There might be a variation in time when the moon will be seen in different countries over a 24 hour period. Hence, the sighting of the new moon or crescent in Saudi Arabia is taken as the basis on which the period of Ramadan starts or ends.
Ramadan 2012 has also advanced by a few days from Ramadan 2011. This is because the Islamic calendar is a few days shorter than the lunar calendar of 365 days. Whatever be it, Ramadan is a sacred period for all Muslims and is known as the holy month. For more details on Ramadan, visit www.day-finder.com.
