Free Texting Preferred Over Voice Calls by 1/3 of Consumers in the United States
A media representative for SMSSheep.com, a popular free texting provider, today announced the results of a texting study reported on CNN Tech. The study found that more than 1/3 of American consumers prefer receiving a text message to a phone call.

While American adults prefer free texting to phone calls, an additional 14% of respondents said the contact method they prefer depends on the situation. Many consumers agree with the participants simply because in the case of an emergency situation a phone call should be made. The chief executive officer at SMSSheep.com said, "If it's an emergency you should pick up the phone to make the call. People need answers quickly in an emergency."
The study focused on American adults of all ages, but not surprisingly, younger adults between the ages of 18 to 24 are especially likely to use free texting . It's also interesting to learn that the typical smartphone user in this age group sends more than 3,000 texts a month. A larger percentage of the younger adults send about 50 text messages on an average day.
Consumers over the age of 65 don't text as much as the younger generations. In fact, the rate of texting by the 18 to 24 year old group is 23 times more than that of senior citizens. The large difference could be because smartphones are relatively new while senior citizens grew up with the rotary dial phone at home.
Pew did not speculate on this, but a popular writer at How Stuff Works suggests that privacy is a big concern for the consumers who do most of the texting. It is not likely that hackers are going to eves drop on text messages and there is no voice conversation for anyone to overhear. It can also be a matter of courtesy in public places such as a bus or restaurant where people are close together.
