New York, NY (prHWY.com) February 3, 2011 - Many non-profit organizations especially in the New York City area find it difficult to engage young professionals in the giving process. Typically, they are beginning their careers and may feel that they do not have the extra income to give to a charity, however worthwhile. Today, creating awareness and reaching young professionals is easier...with tools like Facebook, Twitter, and blogs...but converting them into donors is a challenge. The good news is that young professionals do shell out money for their social lives. The obvious strategy then for most non-profits is to try and engage them where they socialize. Cultivating donors, young or old, requires time and patience. Potential donors want to know that an organization is doing good work and that their contributions will make a difference. It's up to the non-profit to bring the message to the target audience. Enter happy hour...a mecca for young professionals. It presents the perfect opportunity to create an environment to facilitate networking and meeting new people while making a case for your cause. Non-profits need to emphasize that you don't necessarily have to give hundreds of dollars, just be present and active...attend events, volunteer, and spread the word. It's about raising awareness. The dollars will follow.

Going with this trend, DebRA of America is hosting a Happy Hour Fundraiser to help raise Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) awareness. Epidermolysis Bullosa is "the worst disease you've never heard of." It is a painful genetic skin disease that affects 1 out of every 50,000 babies born. Children with EB have skin so fragile the slightest friction causes severe blistering--inside and outside of their bodies.

Through a series of happy hour events Debra hopes to attract young professionals who are socially conscious and want to be engaged in social good. On Wednesday, February 9th, supporters of DebRA will come out for a few drinks and appetizers with friends and family to support the cause. The DebRA staff will be in attendance to discuss the organization's programs and services. In addition, some EB families will be attending to share their experiences living with the disease.
