CLAYGATE, United Kingdom (prHWY.com) August 7, 2012 - Stratascan SUMO has recently completed a ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey over a major obstruction beneath the streets of Lewisham.

Stratascan are part of the SUMO Group, a multi-disciplinary surveying company operating a network of 30, fully equipped survey teams located throughout the UK.

Andrew Picton of Tully De'Ath, civil and structural engineering consultants, commissioned Stratascan SUMO to determine the extent of a former railway bridge suspected to still exist beneath the junction of Lewisham Road and Sparta Street in South East London.

During some earlier work on a gas main, steel beams were found beneath the street. The site photograph below gives no indication of what lies beneath, but the historic map search revealed that the now redundant South Eastern and Chatham Railway once passed under the junction. The image above from the NCE (New Civil Engineer) magazine website shows a view of the bridge taken from Black Heath Hill Station just north of the road junction.
