Seattle, WA (prHWY.com) August 15, 2012 - A recent sleep study has shown some intriguing results which could make a world of difference to those of us who never seem to get enough sleep.

Everyone knows that sleep in an important factor in our overall health. If you don't get a good night's rest, your entire day is affected. The benefits of getting enough sleep span all the way from helping maintain a healthy weight to staying stress-free.

Dr. Paul Saunders of Ohio Center for Sleep Sciences has spent years of his career studying sleep and its effects on the brain. Saunders has been involved in many ongoing studies that change just one factor and look at its influence on a sleeping person. Factors like intensities of light, sounds, and most recently the types of mattresses. The results have been starting.

"When we began the study, we expected to see slight changes in time to fall asleep and possibly ability to stay asleep depending on the mattress type. The difficulty of this kind of study is how varied people are in their ability to sleep. Some people can fall asleep in a matter of minutes while others lie awake for a long while waiting for their brain to turn off. These people are night thinkers-- they reflect on the day's events, think about what they have to do the next day, and often find themselves fantasizing about their long term goals or worrying about their future. While it's important to reflect on your life, the cons begin to outweigh the pros when it means you're sacrificing sleep."

In the recent sleep study, Saunders observed across the board the volunteers were able to fall asleep faster on a memory foam mattress as compared to a box spring. Night thinkers were asleep as soon as their head hit the pillows. But that wasn't the end of what Saunders observed.

"When we fall asleep we go through stages. It takes time for us to get into a deep sleep, which is what our bodies really need. While all levels of sleep are important, if you don't get to that deep sleep you can wake up and not feel rested. In the study I observed all of the volunteers slip into that deep sleep faster and stay there longer while sleeping on a memory foam mattress than they did on a typical box spring."

Saunders' studies may influence consumers when they're buying a mattress. A memory foam mattress may be able to help you get to sleep faster, and get more of that deep sleep your body needs to keep you going during the day.
