New book "Freakshow Los Angeles" documents the history of Los Angeles freak-shows and side-shows

Los Angeles, CA (prHWY.com) August 17, 2012 - Authored by filmmaker and creative artist Carl Crew, "Freakshow Los Angeles" is the history of the Los Angeles circus freak-show and side-show scenes. "Freakshow Los Angeles" features midgets, clowns, magicians, models, unique performers, and underground circus entertainment personalities that have participated in the numerous events hosted by Carl Crew over the past 18 years.

Carl Crew, known in many circles as the "Barnum of Burbank Blvd." has been responsible for the promotion and the hosting of numerous underground circus entertainment events at his venue, the California Institute of Abnormal Arts. Carl Crew said "Circus entertainment is unique in that children and adults can all enjoy the wonders that we present. My 450 page plus book is a tribute to the great performers and artists that have brought their skills and talents to the thousands. Circus entertainment is a visual and physical art form that is enjoyable by all ages."

Although the circus has been viewed as entertainment since the time of the ancient Romans, the first modern circus started in 1768. Despite the view that many individuals have in regards to circus performers and the circus as being a minor element in the gamut of visual and performing arts, the circus has been vital in launching the careers of many famous performers.
