Are We Just Waiting To See Another Gunman In The News? One College Senior's Perspective
Kate Capuzzo, a Senior at Emmanuel College in Boston shares her perspective on the only logical choice: Ban Assault Weapons.

The state of Massachusetts has been a gun control leader since 1998 when its ban on assault weapons took effect. While this ban created important new criteria for disqualifying citizens for firearms licensesalong with other changes to protect the public, it also mandated that a minimum of $50,000 in licensing fees be used for the operation of the Firearms License Review Board to ensure the board would not suffer budget cuts.
Attorney John Slattery, a former Massachusetts State Representative from Peabody whowas instrumental in getting the 1998 legislation passed, feels gun control and public safety is even more important today. "We must be willing to stand up for public safety against the national and local gun lobbies to continue to make Massachusetts a national leader on gun control," saidSlattery, who is running for the Massachusetts Senate in the 2nd Essex district."I know that local families and law enforcement professionals share with me a strong belief that public safety demands that such weapons be illegal. We cannot have criminals armed with more dangerous guns than those used by law enforcement."
American citizens seek comfort in the order and stability provided by government and elected officials. We depend on hospitals to care for us and rely on law enforcement to provide protection. No matter if you wish to leave the world a better place than you entered it, if you dream of a harmonious future, or if you desire to preserve the purity of those just beginning their journey, passing a ban on assault weapons is a meaningful first step in stoppingpeoplewho intend to inflict mass destruction and chaos. With the reality of recent gun related massacre in our minds, a ban on assault weapons isnot only a logical choice--it is the only choice.
