Rare Type of Mold Found to Have Exotic Cleansing Powers
What do a local cosmetics company and a rare form of brown mold have in common? The answer just might surprise people. They both combined forces to create a facial cleansing product that is out of this world.

Natural Essences Cosmetics, Inc. sent a team of developers out on a group building exercise to the jungles of South America. It was on this little trip that the group discovered that a rare form of brown mold found only in the darkest, dampest areas of the jungles could be used as a facial cleanser.
"We were out exploring the area for a team building exercise", said lead researcher Terri Summers. "We came across this type of spongy mold and were joking around that it looked like it could be used as a facial cleansing sponge. We dared one of the interns to try it and to our surprise their skin looked crystal clear and clean!"
The group was so surprised that they took several samples of the mold back to their hotel rooms. The mold was preserved in tiny test tubes and taken back to the labs in Dallas, Texas.
"It was a pain trying to get the mold through customs", said Terri Summers. "The agents weren't sure if we were smuggling some rare type of plant or something into the country. After several hours of questioning they realized we weren't doing anything wrong and let us go."
The mold was taken back to the processing plant where the group was able to test out its cleansing power. It was during the testing process that the group realized that the mold actually secretes a liquid that serves as a cleansing product.
"The mold produces this type of liquid when kept in cold conditions", explained Terri Summers. "That liquid is what gives it the power to work as a facial cleanser. We are currently trying to see if we can take that liquid and make it into some type of bottled product for our cosmetics line. I'm not sure too many people want to spread mold on their face, even if it does work."
The testing process is expected to take several weeks to see if the liquid can be used on its own. Part of the testing process will look at how well it cleans the skin, how long the shelf life is for the product, and what if anything it can treat.
