Portland Locksmith Company expresses different types of keys & how they work
You have probably never thought about it before, but there are actually many types of keys that are currently used in today's world. Portland Locksmith Company encourages you to learn about new types of keys, and locks.

* Skeleton Key: This type of key was most popularly used in the 1800's. The key is now mostly only used on antique doors and furniture. They are not very useful locks because keys that have a similar shape or are slightly smaller than the original key will be able to open the lock. You are probably most familiar with this type of key due to popular jewelry today. The key has a very antique look to them and can have a very intricately designed bow.
* Tubular Key: These keys look very different from a normal, everyday key. They have a hollow, cylindrical shaft which usually is very short and has a large diameter. These keys are usually used with vending machines, bike locks, and home alarm systems in the United States. This particular type of key is very hard to duplicate due to the fact that they are not as commonly used and require a different type of duplication machine.
* Double Sided Key: This type of key looks very similar to a generic house or car key except it has two sets of teeth rather than one. Rather than having a set of teeth on the top and bottom, it has the main set of teeth on top and a second set directly below it. The profile of this key looks almost identical to generic keys, but due to the multiple teeth makes it much more difficult to pick.
* Four Sided Key: This key is by far the most unique looking type. It is commonly called a cross key because if you were to look at the tip of the key it would look like a cross. All four sides have individual teeth. Due to the fact that it has four sets of teeth rather than one or two, it makes the key hard to duplicate and the lock extremely hard to pick. Due to the shape of the key, it also makes the key much more physically durable than most.
Most Portland locksmiths are familiar with all types of keys and are able to make most. If you are interested in getting a new lock installed in your home or office, you may want to try getting a more intricate lock such as the four described above.
