Young Girl Aims to Combat Boys Only Clubhouses with National Girls Only Day

Movies and books often depict young boys creating a clubhouse that is for 'boys only'. While this type of behavior is often thought of as a coming-of-age ritual, some girls are starting to fight back.

Seattle, WA (prHWY.com) August 28, 2012 - Movies and books often depict young boys creating a clubhouse that is for 'boys only'. While this type of behavior is often thought of as a coming-of-age ritual, some girls are starting to fight back. A group of pre-teen girls in the Atlanta, Georgia area are creating a national 'girls only' day, which is dedicated to empowering girls to make their own clubhouse and rules.

"We were tired of always seeing clubhouses with 'boys only' signs on them", said 10-year-old Tammy Salem. "We wanted to show the world that girls can create their own clubs and do things just like the boys can. It isn't just the boys who can create their own little clubhouse; we can too!"

Tammy Salem along with five of her friends took to the Internet in an effort to join groups of girls all across the United States on this Nation Girls Only Day. The group of girls, with parental supervision, created a Facebook and Twitter account to publicize the event.

"We didn't just want the neighbors taking part in this event", said Tammy. "I wanted this to be a national event in which everyone could take part in."

The girls Facebook and Twitter group took off within minutes of being launched. Over 150 different girls only groups have RSVP'd to the event and agreed to take part in the event.

One of the unique aspects of the event is the girls' ability to take part in a board game at the same time all across the United States. The girls have pre-arranged for everyone to take out the same board game and play it at the same time.

"We couldn't think of a way to unite us together nationally", said Tammy. "So I thought what if at a designated time we all sat down and played the same board game together. That would be a bonding tool that we could use and allow us to feel like we are all a part of something together."

The girls have agreed that at 4 p.m. EST/1 p.m. PST they will all gather around and play a fun game of Monopoly together. Some of the groups have even agreed to broadcast the event via group Skype.

"I'm extremely proud of Tammy for organizing this event", said Sally Salem, Tammy's mother. "She's talking about making the event bigger and better next year, which I am thrilled that she would want to do something like that."
