Sachin endorses 'My School Initiative'

Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar recently endorsed the 'My School Initiative' at an event in Mumbai. The initiative is a six month long campaign to raise funds for infrastructures in schools in rural and semi-urban towns in India.

Mumbai, India (prHWY.com) February 24, 2011 - Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar recently endorsed 'My School', a joint initiative by Coca Cola India and media giant NDTV. Some of the other big names who are also a part of this cause are UN-Habitat, Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) and Sulabh International. Tendulkar who was conferred upon the Bharat Ratna for his exemplary contribution to the game of cricket said that he was proud to be associated with this social cause that would make a difference to the education of the girl child in India. The six month long campaign will involve donors coming up with hefty sums to support the cause of improving infrastructures in schools in rural and semi urban India.

'I am extremely honoured to be part of this campaign,' Tendulkar said. 'I can't wait to make things happen and contribute towards this initiative. I hope we are able to achieve our dreams and bring smiles to the faces of children and their parents,' said Tendulkar who was present along with his wife Anjali. The campaign aims to improve sanitation in schools. 'Children-especially girls-often drop out of schools because they do not have working bathrooms,' Tendulkar said adding that 'a multilateral partnership of this kind is an appropriate initiative to catalyse such a movement.'

Apart from Sachin Tendulkar and other corporate bigwigs, the event was graced by Bollywood actress Dia Mirza and Prannoy Roy. The basic idea behind the campaign is to promote education for girls in India's backward areas. Sachin said that the issue of girls shying away from school due to lack of basic amenities needs to be addressed so that girls are encouraged to attend school. Sachin also opined that since women are the backbone of every society, young girls being educated is a prime necessity. While interacting with the NDTV Chief, Prannoy Roy, Sachin said it was a very conscious decision to be a part of this project because he realized the important role that women play in today's society. On a similar note, Bollywood actress Dia Mirza said that providing basic and hygienic amenities in schools would promote more and more girls to attend school and get educated.
