San Jose, CA (prHWY.com) August 31, 2012 - At one point or another, everyone has needed the assistance of a locksmith. Most likely it was for the time you locked yourself out of your home or vehicle. When you needed a locksmith, how did you go about finding one? Did you already know of one? Did you ask a friend for a reference? Or maybe you simply opened the yellow pages and found one for yourself. How did you know you were getting a trained professional rather than a scam artist though? (basic reviews)

There are numerous scams that locksmiths can do to you. For instance, they may be able to go as far as stealing your vehicle. Most likely, this will not happen, but it has before. The most common scam a locksmith will pull is quoting you for work that seems reasonable and then sending you a bill for much more. Due to this, you should make yourself aware of the types of scams that are being pulled today. You should also know how to handle a locksmith scam once you are already in the situation.

The most common type of scam is when the locksmith comes off as an actual business. They may place ads in the newspaper, on the internet, or even in phone books. The business will say that it is a local locksmith and will have a fake address. The advertisements will have a real phone number though. They will usually connect you to a cellular phone or a call center in another state. Once you say what you are looking for they will connect you to a different locksmith in your area.

Once you are on the phone with a locksmith in your local area, they will give you a reasonable quote for the work they must do. The problem is that once they arrive to help you, they give you a bill for a much larger amount. They will tell you that the lock was harder to break into possibly. Or maybe your car requires a special type of lock rather than the cheap common ones. They may even take longer to open the lock and will charge you for their time spent. Strangely enough, most of these companies of fairly good standings with the Better Business Bureau. The reason for this is because most people will just pay the amount told rather than fight it.

How do you spot when you are about to be taken in a scam? The easiest way is by looking at the vehicle the drive up in. Is it an unmarked car or does it have a logo on the side? Most legitimate San Jose locksmith companies will put logos on the side of their vehicles so a customer will know when they have arrived. You could also request an invoice ahead of time. This will ensure the amount you will be charged before they have even arrived. The last thing you should look for is if they request to see your identification. They will want to make sure they are helping the correct person.
