Walking in a Dream
"Angels whisper to a man when he goes out for a walk." - Raymond Inmon. These words reflect the effect a walk along the breath taking coastlines of Lanzarote have on the human mind.
The spectacularly varied coastlines of this eastern tip of the Canary Islands are a visual delight. This is exactly the kind of stuff dreams are made of. And walking through these enamoring weaves of nature is nothing short of a lucid dream. Truly, if there is a way to relish the real soul of Lanzarote, then it is only by walking through its coastlines. May it be the northern terraced hills covered with greenery, or the devastatingly attractive Malpais, the lands crafted by volcanoes themselves, there is no dearth of scenic spots to stroll by in Lanzarote.
Beauty and danger, for that matter, have always been unexpectedly comfortable partners. And what better example of this than the volcano island of Lanzarote. This island can attribute most of the beautiful coastlines to past volcanic activities. Around mid 17th century, the island was engulfed in one of the longest volcanic activity in the area that continued for over 5 years. On one hand the island was covered with lava, however, on the other hand this activity led to some wild rock formations and mad geology. It is but a beautiful irony that the dangerous and destructive volcanoes have played a role in crafting the breathtakingly beautiful Lanzarote coasts.
The tourist walk
Monumento Natural de los Ajaches is one of the oldest volcanic rock formations around the area. This is also the sheltered side of this island, where the sea is calmer. The best way to explore this terrain is on foot. Start from the Playa Blanca and take the foot trodden path towards the Femes Mountains. The Monumento Natural de los Ajaches is a surreal collection of rock formation and beaches formed by the tectonic movements years ago. Take the time to drink in this out of the world beauty. Listen to the silence of the sea as it whispers to the soundless footsteps you make on its shores. This is a walk which refreshes the soul.
A walk through the Timanfaya National Park is another way one can gain better understanding of how this dream like volcanic island got crafted by nature itself. The uncharacteristic wildlife of this otherwise spare dwelling hints at the strength and struggle for survival in a barrenly beautiful Lanzarote.
Walk the unexplored
There are many old but well used shepherds paths also, which may as well be as old as the first inhabitants of Lanzarote, that can be used to walk around and absorb the natural beauty of the place.
There are many books and guides that can provide detailed information about walking possibilities. Walk! Lanzarote Weather is one such book.
Whether you choose to stroll through for a few minutes, or decide to trek along for hours, walking is but an endless pleasure in this beautiful island.
