Ponte Vedra Beach, FL (prHWY.com) September 10, 2012 - August 31, 2012 - Yoga Insurance Pluscelebrates the National Yoga Month of September with a "Challenge Pose" recently highlighted inYoga Journal, a back-bending yoga position for the savvy yogi, the EkaPadaViparitaDandasana I. Also known as the "one-legged inverted staff pose," the EkaPadaViparitaDandasana I is definitely a yoga pose for the strong of heart!

As author and yoga instructor, Beryl Bender Birch notes in her Yoga Journal article (see link below), "Most of us can achieve the beautiful actions of this asana only by practicing regularly and earnestly for months or years." However daunting that idea may seem, working one's way into yoga postures like this one is well worth it.

The health benefits of practicing yoga are myriad, but engaging with yoga poses that incorporate an inversion with a backbend provides additional perks for the body, beyond the well-known effects of increased flexibility and strength that yoga offers. In general, inversion yoga postures allow one's blood to flow in a direction opposite from the body's daily routine. This is change in circulation is great news for the brain, in particular! However, all of the body's systems, including the digestive, lymphatic, and nervous systems, will experience a significant and revitalizing shift with an inversion.

Backbends, too, create a literal shift in the body. As Birch mentions in her Yoga Journal article, the human spine spends an enormous amount of time engaged in forward-bending activity. Unless one is a professional gymnast or yoga practitioner, odds are high that one does not incorporate a backbend into the daily routine. As such, most individuals will experience something new and beneficial when moving into back-bending yoga positions. The spine has a great deal of natural flexibility that is not often exercised, arguably like that other 90% of the human brain. What better way to celebrate ultimate flexibility and brain stimulation than this exciting yoga posture?

Of course, if one needs to work up to the "Challenge" yoga pose, several variations exist on a theme that combine a level of inversion with a backbend. Got Wheel? This mid-level yoga pose seems simple in concept: feet = on the floor, hands = on the floor. Everything sounds easy about it, except the part where one's belly is up in the air, and one is looking at the world upside down. This makes the Urdhva Dhanurasana, as this yoga position is called in Sanskrit, a bit of a literal stretch for some, yet easier than Yoga Insurance Plus's"Challenge"yoga pose from Yoga Journal.
