BBB President and CEO Michelle Corey states that the law protects consumers against these dubious practices. The bureau advises, however, that even though consumers don't want to shell out more money for repairs, they should be wary of companies claiming to be able to finish the work for less than the figures quoted by their insurance companies.

Corey also warns people against hiring contractors who may give a substantially lower quote than actual market rates. They may end up using substandard materials to compensate for their low ball bid or they might fail to complete the job to the customer's specifications.
