Noida, India (prHWY.com) September 15, 2012 - The verbal ability & logical reasoning section is known for taking test of the comprehending skills of aspirants. If you are comparatively weak in this section, do not fret. With hard and sincere work in the remaining days to CAT 2012, you can make a positive difference.

This article of MBAUniverse.com shares the tips from toppers on how to prepare for the verbal ability & logical reasoning section.

Read a lot: There is no substitute for reading when it comes to the VA & LR section. Reading not only helps build vocabulary but sharpens the ability of understanding as well. The best reading materials are newspapers, magazines and novels. "Reading novels and newspapers helped me a lot to do well in this section," says Chinmay Nahar, 99.82 percentile in CAT 2011 and an IIM Indore student. Said Anusha Subramanian, 99.80 percentiler in CAT 2011 and an IIM Bangalore student, "Developing the reading habit helps to do well in this section. Apart from taking mock tests, reading newspapers, good novels and magazines helps not only in verbal ability questions but also during interviews."

Focus on vocabulary, RC & grammar: In the verbal ability area, reading comprehension (RC), grammar or English usage and vocabulary play a major role. So in the remaining 25 days, you must focus on improving on these topics. For vocabulary, using flash cards and reading are the best methods. For English usage and vocabulary, practice is the best way. "I studied cue cards, practised a lot of RCs and grammar for VA," says Tanishq Goyal, 99.97 percentiler at CAT 2011 and an IIM Ahmedabad student.

Mohit Srivastava, 99.93 percentiler and an IIM Bangalore student, suggests, "The first thing is to improve your reading and comprehension speed. It requires understanding the tone of the author and un-weaving the close set of options. Work on para jumbles and inference-based questions. Practice is the best way." Echoing Srivastava, Vishal Vyas, 99.98 percentiler and an IIM Indore student, says, "VA requires great vocabulary for which newspapers, novels and books like Word Power Made Easy are the best resources. RC passages require practice for the correct interpretation."

Take simulated tests: Taking simulated tests is the best method to not only judge your preparation but also to know the areas where you lack, so that you can plan your preparation accordingly. "Solve as many papers as possible and recognize the pattern of questions and the rules applied to arrive at the answers. Be willing to take chances in the actual exam as no matter how good one is, he/she can never be sure of the answers. The strategy is to maximize attempts," says Premmasani Sri Ram Prasad, 100 percentile scorer of CAT 2011 and an IIM Ahmedabad student.

Develop a strategy to assure accuracy: As you solve more and more mock tests, you will be able to develop a strategy that suits you well. Chinmay Nahar, 99.82 percentiler in CAT 2011 and an IIM Indore student, bats for the elimination method to reach the most accurate answer. "For the VA & LR section, I used the strategy of elimination. Generally, most problems boil down to two answers that are very close. To choose the right one between these two, it requires considerable amount of practice and analyzing power."

Vinit Anand, 99.79 percentiler and an IIM Indore student, shares a similar strategy -- "Verbal ability questions helped me develop a notion of the types of questions that could be framed. Narrowing down the options by critical reasoning helped me in comprehensions."

LR can be tricky: Logical reasoning can be a tricky section. The strategy here is to read between the lines in the question, draw images if necessary and reach the answer. Here also you may solve questions by the method of elimination. Talking about the types of questions, Mohit says, "LR is more of getting used to various types of caselets and questions. LR is tricky in the sense that time has to be managed smartly. I made sure that I wasn't getting stuck to a question for more than four minutes." Vishal mentions, "LR questions can turn out to be tricky at times; so the case-based approach can be used to tackle it."
